Have you ever witnessed your dog suddenly tuck their tail, widen their eyes, and sprint around the living room at lightning speed?
These sudden, frantic bursts of energy are colloquially known as the "zoomies." In veterinary science, we call them FRAPs (Frenetic Random Activity Periods).
What Triggers FRAPs?
FRAPs are a completely normal and healthy way for dogs to release pent-up energy, relief, or excitement. Common triggers include:
* Post-bath relief: Sprinting to dry off and shake off the stressful bath experience.
* Transition times: Waking up from a long nap or returning home after being in a crate.
* Temperature changes: Cooler evening air often sparks a sudden urge to run.
Should You Stop Them?
Generally, no! FRAPs are a sign of a happy, healthy dog. However, you should ensure they zoom in a safe environment. Slippery hardwood floors or areas near sharp table corners can lead to injuries. If your dog starts zooming, open the backdoor to direct them onto safe, open grass.
